Cake Catastrophe
After seven years of making cakes it finally happened...my first cake catastrophe. It was a Curious George cake for a first birthday. My customer was going to pick it up at 10 a.m. the next day. At 9 p.m. the night before, I was sitting in front of the t.v. relaxing with popcorn and a glass of champagne. The cake was almost complete , I had handpainted all the decorations for a special painted effect. Curious George was sitting happily in his corner of the cake waiting for me to add the final touches in the morning. Suddenly I heard a soft "plop" coming from the table behind me. My husband and I both looked at each other in surprise and I just said, "You know who that was don't you?" I turned around to find this:
Repaired corner and scraped off arms. I was able to reattach corner using thinned buttercream as glue and a dowel inserted horizontally into the cake.
Luckily his head was still in tact with just few bald spots and a couple of tiny facial lines. I repositioned the head to the center of cake and piped on the basic arm shape.
The basic body shape has been piped on and he's now ready for his "hair".
Two hours later!! Repair completed and my cake has been saved. I had to pray for my mama's help on this one!
The finished product... What's he smiling about?! My husband was amazed at how calm I was throughout. I think it was the champagne!
Egads!!! How the heck was I going to fix this disaster??! My first thought was to call my customer and tell her the cake was ruined, but I knew she was expecting a really special cake for her son's first birthday. I tried not to panic, I had to at least try , so I just got to work. These are step by step photos of how I was able to save this little brat:
